First mover advantage needs anticipation, especially from a technology standpoint.
Market coverage and penetration advantage, as well as the related distribution channels (sales to, sales with, sales through) not only need anticipation but also an in depth market knowledge, including what the competitors are doing or are not doing.In that way “whom to partner with ?” is key. The various potential partners (as well as the various potential resellers, … and more generally speaking all the potential sales channels) have to be reviewed, checked and validated.
Best mover advantage (becoming the best instead of becoming the first) claims for benchmarking, if the competitive advantage is coming from the synergy of various technologies, the way to integrate those technologies, including the third parties ones (through partnerships, licenses, … ) is a critical factor.
Horizontal Integration through partnerships is a very promising approach, where accurateness is mandatory, in a world where each and every major actor has several opportunities for partnering
Vertical Integration (delivering the product, the related professional services, operating the service) is another competitive approach, aiming to deliver a one-stop-shop service to customers, where integration and /or service level agreements have to take into account a complete commitment all along the value chain.
